Things to do in Guadeloupe

This is very straight forward so I will get started. Guadeloupe is an island so anything and everything water goes. I will include stuff I have done and those I haven’t since they were still of interest.

SCUBA Diving

This tops my list of activities. I had the time of my life. Who would have guessed scuba diving on a rainy day would be so much fun. This was my first time, here they call is Baptême Plongée. I did it with Atlantis Formation (can find them on the net) in Bouillante and I would recommend them to anyone. They have great and very patient instructors who are also English speakers and you get assigned your own instructor. If you want they can also take pictures and videos for you that they’ll give you after.

Once under water, it took me a second to get adjusted to not breathing with my nose and only my mouth. Swimming with the flippers was also a bit hard. I just felt they were heavy. But I would still go scuba diving again and again; it felt so therapeutic seeing all the sea creatures and the surrounding. I went 6m deep.

They also gave me a certificate! How rewarding is that? Made my day.

PS: You do not need to know how to swim to do it 🙂

Glass Boat Tour

If SCUBA isn’t your thing, this can be your answer. I didn’t get the chance to but my friends loved it. They used Le Nautilus group at Malendure beach in Bouillante. You basically go on a boat ride on a glass boat that allows you to see under the sea and can also go snorkeling.

Go to the beach

There are many beautiful beaches all over the island. This was actually my first time seeing a black sand beach. This is the Malendure Beach in Bouillante.

Bouillante actually means boiling and there is a hot water beach in Bouillante. It is next to a geothermal power plant, if that is of interest then you could pass by. I really enjoyed the hot water and worry not, it has different sections with different temperatures so you just move and until you find your medicine. WhatsApp Image 2020-06-01 at 11.29.49 This beach has really nice pebbles, however I’d advise you to carry water shoes just in case the pebbles do not settle well with your heels.  The best time to go is in the evening just as the sun is setting to enjoy a good sunset and go on until dusk, actually you will find most people here at night; do not worry its safe.

Sainte-Anne’s beach has nice blue waters with really nice palm trees around. While at it be sure to enjoy the nice sorbet ice cream by the road.

All these beaches have nice and clear water that you can enjoy doing some snorkeling.

 Hiking the Volcano

I feel sad that I have not done this yet. There are really nice waterfalls and nature to enjoy along the way. You can do it on your own without a guide.

Visit to Le Jardin Botanique

This is a Botanical Garden. Get to be one with nature.  All types of flowers, plants and birds too. I fed a goat too.

Canyoning

Highly recommend this if you are an adventure junkie. I found this site that explains all the different stages that are there, http://www.canopeeguadeloupe.com/?lang=fr. Canyoning is still high on my bucket list, hoping I do it soon so that I report back to you.

Visit La Maison du Cacao

This is basically like a traditional cocoa plantation in Pointe Noire. It has a nice garden with the different types of plants. It has a workshop also for demonstrating and tasting of the products. My favourite tasting was the cassava chocolate. Other amazing things you could get nice oil for the face, rum and everything chocolate from bitter to sweet.

Gwoka performances

This goes down every Thursdays at different joints. The one I went to was at Malendure Beach. Gwoka is a traditional Creole performance accompanied by drums, singing and very unique dancing. It’s such a scene.

Swimming at the River and Waterfall.

IMG-20200127-WA0019There are so many rivers at different places on the island that you can enjoy, always have your swim suit at hand. The water is fresh and natural as it comes from the mountains. This is very essential since the island is usually very hot, hence you can always stop by the river for a quick swim.

Most of the geographical features like the volcano, waterfalls, beaches, and rivers are free and accessible to all which makes being a tourist lots of fun.
